Doctrine Matters! Military doctrine is the fundamental set of principles and lexicon that guides our military as we pursue national objectives. It is our common ingrained institutional belief system that governs how we communicate, operate, and fight. Without this common foundation our joint systems start to collapse only to be replaced with tribal knowledge.
White house National Security Strategy – The national security strategy is the president’s highest strategy primarily directed to the Department of Defense and the Executive branch. It is the primary strategy where all other Executive strategies are derived from.
DOD‘s National Defense Strategy – The Department of Defense’s enduring mission is to provide combat-credible military forces needed to deter war and protect the security of our nation. The National Defense Strategy outlines now DOD will accomplish that mission.
Joint Publication 1 – Joint Publication 1, Doctrine for the Armed Forces of the United States, is the capstone publication for all joint doctrine, presenting fundamental principles and overarching guidance for the employment of the Armed Forces of the United States. This represents the evolution in our warfighting guidance and military theory that forms the core of joint warfighting doctrine and establishes the framework for our forces’ ability to fight as a joint team.
Joint Publication 3 – Joint Publication 3-0, Joint Operations, reflects the current guidance for conducting joint activities across the range of military operations and is the basis for US participation in multinational operations where the US has not ratified specific doctrine or procedures. This keystone publication forms the core of joint warfighting doctrine and establishes the framework for our forces’ ability to fight as a joint team.
Often called the “linchpin” of the joint doctrine publication hierarchy, the overarching constructs and principles contained in this publication provide a common perspective from which to plan and execute joint operations independently or in cooperation with our multinational partners, other US Government departments and agencies, and international and nongovernmental organizations.
Joint Publication 5-0 – Joint Publication (JP) 5-0, Joint Planning, reflects current doctrine for conducting joint, interagency, and multinational planning activities across the range of military operations. This keystone publication is part of the core of joint doctrine and establishes the planning framework for our forces’ ability to fight and win as a joint team.
SECNAV A Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower – The is is the Secretary of the Navy’s, a political appointee, guidance for WHERE he wants the Navy to go. It discusses the global environment, guidance for working together with partners and direction on building the future force.
Navy CNO’s Design for Maintaining Maritime superiority – This document is written by the Chief of Naval Operations, and primarily covers the HOW of how the Navy intends on fulling National objectives as outlined by the President and SECNAV. In addition the CNO outlines his priorities and lines of effort in order to accomplish those objectives.
FM 6-22 – Army Leadership. We acknowledge, this is not a Navy published document; however, it is one of the best and most comprehensive manuals on military leadership available. While it does not contain any groundbreaking ideas, FM 6-22 contains the overall principles for leadership applicable to all services.
