The Navy SEAL Playbook

Author Interview with Don Mann, U.S. Navy SEAL (Ret.) and New York Times Bestselling Author

The Navy SEAL Playbook is a practical guide to the mindset, discipline, and operational principles that define one of the world’s most elite fighting forces. Drawn from decades of experience in special operations, the playbook breaks down the core habits that allow SEALs to perform under extreme pressure—mental toughness, physical readiness, teamwork, and decisive leadership.

More than a military manual, it is a framework for approaching life’s challenges with clarity and resilience. The principles inside emphasize preparation, accountability, adaptability, and the ability to stay focused when conditions become difficult or uncertain.

At its core, The Navy SEAL Playbook teaches a simple truth: success—whether on the battlefield, in business, or in life—comes from disciplined preparation, unwavering standards, and the refusal to quit when the mission becomes hard.

Tell us about your book.

The Navy SEAL Playbook goes beyond simple motivation or military storytelling. It is a practical guide to the principles, habits, and mental frameworks that allow Navy SEALs to operate in some of the most demanding environments on earth. Written from the perspective of a veteran SEAL and longtime instructor, the book draws on decades of experience in special operations, training, and leadership. It distills lessons learned from real missions, intense training environments, and the unforgiving standards of the SEAL Teams into clear, actionable principles that can be applied far beyond the battlefield.

The playbook explores the foundations that define elite performance: mental toughness, disciplined preparation, leadership under pressure, teamwork and trust, and the ability to adapt when plans inevitably change. Throughout the book, real-world stories from SEAL training and operational experience illustrate these lessons in action. These stories are not about glorifying combat, but about understanding how preparation, resilience, and clarity of purpose allow individuals and teams to perform when the stakes are highest.

At its heart, The Navy SEAL Playbook is about developing a mindset. The same principles that help SEALs succeed in combat like discipline, accountability, courage, and perseverance are the same principles that help people succeed in leadership, business, and life. Elite performance is not reserved for the battlefield. It is built through daily habits, personal standards, and the willingness to push forward when most people would quit.

What leadership problem or gap does this book address?

Many modern leadership books focus heavily on theory, management language, and corporate frameworks. While useful in some contexts, they often overlook the reality that leadership is ultimately tested under pressure when uncertainty is high, time is short, and the consequences of poor decisions are real. The Navy SEAL Playbook addresses the gap between leadership theory and leadership under stress.

In many organizations, leaders are promoted based on technical ability or tenure rather than their ability to lead people through adversity. When challenges arise, teams often struggle with unclear direction, weak accountability, and leaders who hesitate when decisive action is required. This book introduces readers to leadership principles forged in environments where failure is not an option. It addresses several common leadership challenges: avoiding accountability when outcomes are poor, decision paralysis during fast-moving situations, weak team cohesion, and a lack of mental resilience when adversity persists. The SEAL model emphasizes responsibility, trust, preparation, and clarity of purpose.

Ultimately, the book reinforces a simple but powerful truth: leadership is not about position or authority. It is about responsibility, example, and the ability to guide others through difficulty with clarity and courage.

How did your military experience shape this work?

This book is not built on theory or second-hand accounts. It comes from experience in demanding environments where leadership, discipline, and performance were tested every day. In the SEAL Teams, leadership is not abstract. Decisions affect the safety of the team and the success of the mission. That reality shapes everything from preparation to accountability.

One of the most powerful lessons I learned was that elite performance is not accidental. It comes from a culture of relentless standards. SEAL training reinforces the idea that success is built long before the mission begins through preparation, discipline, and attention to detail.

Another defining lesson is the power of the team. No mission is accomplished alone. Trust, communication, and shared hardship are what allow teams to function under extreme pressure.

Mental toughness also became a central theme. Through years of demanding training and operational challenges, I learned that endurance is as much mental as it is physical. Resilience is developed through adversity, not comfort.

Finally, much of my career involved training others. That experience shaped the book into more than a collection of stories. It became a practical guide to help others prepare for challenges, remain calm under pressure, and lead with clarity. Elite performance is built through discipline, preparation, accountability, and the willingness to keep moving forward when things get hard.

What historical figure, event, or book most influenced your thinking?

The events of World War II and the extraordinary courage of the men who fought in it left a lasting impression on me. The example of the generation that fought that war demonstrated a level of sacrifice, resilience, and national purpose that continues to shape how many of us think about duty and service. Closer to home, my father’s military service had a profound impact on how I viewed responsibility and commitment. Watching his example helped shape my understanding of what it means to serve something larger than yourself.

My thinking was also shaped by the leaders I served with in the SEAL Teams. At SEAL Team ONE, SEAL Team TWO, and SEAL Team SIX, I had the privilege of serving under leaders who demonstrated what real leadership looks like under pressure. They led through example, enforced high standards, and earned the trust of the men they commanded. Those lessons became the foundation for the leadership principles I later tried to apply and pass on when I was in a position to lead myself.

If a junior officer or enlisted leader could take only one lesson from your book, what would it be?

Lead from the front, own your decisions, and hold yourself to the standards you expect of others.

In other words, lead by example.

Your team will follow not because you tell them to, but because they see you living the principles you expect them to uphold. Discipline, accountability, and courage are contagious when demonstrated consistently. True leadership isn’t about rank. It’s about action.

Why is reading important for today’s military professional?

In today’s military, brains matter as much as brawn. Reading trains your mind to think faster, see farther, and act smarter. It allows leaders to learn from the experiences of others and absorb lessons without paying the price of failure themselves. A SEAL who reads is not just stronger and tougher. They are sharper, more thoughtful, and better prepared for uncertainty.

Read. Learn. Lead. Repeat.

What books would you recommend to someone preparing for greater responsibility?

The Art of War by Sun Tzu. The core lesson is timeless strategy, understanding adaptability, deception, and knowing both your strengths and weaknesses.

On War by Carl von Clausewitz. This work helps leaders understand the realities of conflict, the fog of war, and the relationship between objectives, resources, and risk.

What do you hope this book contributes to the military community?

The Navy SEAL Playbook exists to give leaders a roadmap for performing under pressure, leading with accountability, and building teams that succeed when the stakes are highest. My hope is that it helps service members develop mental toughness, clarity of purpose, and the kind of disciplined leadership that strengthens teams and prepares the next generation for whatever mission lies ahead.

Is there a story from the book you’d like to share?

During BUD/S training there is a moment in the surf where the instructors stop timing you. You have done the drill hundreds of times, but one day they make it clear:

“Finish it. No one is coming to save you.”

My team and I were exhausted. Muscles screaming, lungs burning. Some started to slow. Some thought about quitting. But the drill was never about physical strength. It was about mindset. I reminded myself and my teammates: you don’t stop. You do the work because it matters. You do the work because quitting is not an option.

We finished one grueling stroke at a time. Not because anyone cheered. Not because anyone was timing us. But because we had trained to rely on ourselves and each other. That moment taught me a lesson that has stayed with me ever since:

Discipline isn’t for recognition. It’s for survival.
Resilience isn’t for comfort. It’s for mission success.

Anything else readers should know?

The Navy SEAL Playbook is more than stories or motivation. It is a roadmap for performing when it matters most. Every lesson comes from real experience: leadership under pressure, mental toughness, discipline, and teamwork. The same principles that make SEALs effective in combat like preparation, accountability, resilience, and action can make any leader effective in life.

Success is not given. It is earned one disciplined decision at a time.
